Nordic Product Design Aalto
Project type
Summer course
My learning outcome designing and prototyping a Nordic-inspired product concept using at least two physical materials has been completed in my opinion.
Throughout the course I have learned a lot about the Nordic design principles, particularly simplicity, sustainability and cultural sensitivity. In the design factory we have experimented with materials with the understanding why Nordic design emphasizes specific material choices.
During the experimentation we practiced with hands-on prototyping, sketching and iterative mock-ups and eventually 3d-printed the prototype.
Besides this I have photographed the prototypes, sketches, museum visit, poster and app layout, which I do think aligns with my portfolio documentation of the entire process.
My learning outcome collaborates in a team to develop a speculative product scenario reflecting Nordic design and critical design thinking, presented as mock-up and visual narrative, has also been met. Because this entire process was with a team made in the beginning of the course.
The lectures on critical, speculative, and discursive design helped me understand de difference between designing solutions and designing provocations. With this theory my and my group were able to sketch, experiment with sustainable foam, early mock-ups and eventually deliver a 3D-printed prototype, supported by the poster and app.
In the end, the course strengthened my confidence as a designer who can think critically, work experimentally, and connect materials, and future-oriented thinking into meaningful concepts.
It also confirmed my commitment to designing with sustainability, curiosity, and societal impact at the forefront.
